Here it is
http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=481607
Also found on the page www.wisconsinethanol.com
a good page for this forum but not in our main page of links.
has many national level stories, not just WI ones.
Sure wish SPECIALGREEN would add it.
(or at least reply to my emails.)

US Government to consider 20 billion dollar loan for Big 3 Automakers. Money is to go to research for more "green vehicles". This is suppose to level the playing field against the Japanese in terms of research. Considering that Honda is already researched and discovered new methods of cellulose ethanol production and is putting up a test plant in 2008. I'm beginning to think the Big 3 need all the help they can get. |

File this under: Stuff we already knew but the rest of the world finally figured it out.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20061025/sc_nm/science_engine_dc_1
| Quote: | The higher pressures and temperatures of a turbocharged engine can lead to a problem known as knock, which occurs when the fuel and air in the engine explode prematurely, hurting performance and potentially damaging the engine.
Cohn said his group's technology avoids that problem by injecting ethanol into the engine when knock is likely to occur. The ethanol vaporizes and cools the fuel-air mixture, keeping it from exploding until the engine is ready.
"This is a very special feature of ethanol," Cohn said.

| Revision- I have been racking my brain to remember where I saw the full research paper MIT put out on this- it was interesting. They proposed using dual compartment fuel tanks to hold gas and ethanol separately and inject ethanol at peak temperatures/ compression to prevent preignition. As little as 5% ethanol would do the trick but they where also proposing that to be variable up to 15%. My only problem with this is who will put in pumps for such small quanities w/o charging a premium price and what consumer will want to put in two fuels. If such pumps would be necessary to operate a vehicle efficiently-- just give me a dedicated high compression alcohol engine. |
