|
|
| I'm currently running my 2000 flex fuel Ranger on regular 87 octane gas. I've run it on E85 in the past but have since switched to 87 since the gas prices have come down and the E85 hasn't come down that much. Well, I've decided to switch back because I just liked how much better my engine seemed to run on the E85. I'm getting a little pinging with the 87 octane. Anyway, what is the best way to switch back? Should I just let my tank get down to near empty and then completely fill it up with E85? Or, should I gradually work the E85 back in, like maybe half E85, half 87 for example? I've been running the 87 for about a month and a half now since switching from the E85. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated! Thanks! |

Personally- I would switch at whatever point you can get to the station to fill it. I put varying blends in the 3 FFVs i run all the time to experiment in an effect to find each engine's sweet spot for mpg and miles per dollar- right now my '05 Taurus is back going thru this testing. I have never had one go thru a rough adapt period except for the Impala which had a defect factory algorithim in it's ECU tune. (GM has since written a free update flash and loaded it in this car).
Some automakers do give recommendations in their manuals to be nearly empty while other automakers say the opposite. My personal opinion would be that it is not an issue as long as you put in at least 4 gallons (for newer algorithim type). I cannot remember where the post was that showed when Ford went from an alcohol sensor to algorithim but it is 1999 or 2000. Keep in mind the automaker tries to make things bulletproof for "dummies" so it really should not be an issue either way you fill it unless the have a "bug" in the software. |

You wouldn't happen to know the ECU/PCM tune number or calibration number for that would you?
I only ask to double check my own, according to my Ethos my tune should be inline with the current GM tune for the car. If it in fact needs the calibration for my year for the issue you have spoken about.
If anyone else is wondering, if you have the calibration from your GM you can check it's status for free right here.

lilwillie- you got me scratching my head on your request- I have been looking everywhere for that calibration #-- I had saved it as a link-or so I thought. It may also be in a thread here or at Planet E85 -cant find it. The Impala this was done on is now being driven by one of my guys- I will look to see if the shop recorded it on a PCM decal or on the service bill as soon as I can see the car. The link i thought I saved was a GM service site and it listed the calibration on the notice along with the purpose/symptom. Do you think that is stored in a readable format for a non-GM scan tool to pick up out of the ECU in the section where the VIN# is stored? If all else fails-I could just ask the GM shop that loaded it |

It should be stored and readable on a good percentage of aftermarket Scan tools. My Snap on Ethos can read mine. I go into the generic section at the beginning and it is listed under Mode $09...calibration, if memory serves.
I'm going to do some more digging myself, thanks for the effort, I appreciate it. _________________ www.williesrepair.blogspot.com |
